Caring for Collections
Over time, all objects can change or deteriorate as a result of environmental conditions, poor display methods, repeated use, accidents, well-intentioned but unsuitable repairs and natural forces of decay. How an object is handled, displayed, and stored can mean the difference between preserving it for many years or for only a short time. You can take an active role in preserving objects for your own enjoyment and for future generations to appreciate.
The information contained on these pages is designed to give you the basic principles of object preservation. Whether your treasured objects are family photographs, an oil painting, or Chinese porcelain, these guidelines will help you begin to learn how to care for them.
Guidelines on a wide variety of materials will be added over the next few weeks. If you have a type of artefact which is not listed here or if you are unsure which specialism you require, please contact the membership secretary to see if we have a member who can help you.
